SUMMARY:Building European bridges in research\, development and innovation
DESCRIPTION:Cycle of talks by prestigious researchers from Spain or working in Spain. These events are sponsored by the Areces Foundation and the Spanish Embassy in Estonia. \nThe first of the talks was given by Dr. Isabel García Cortés\, researcher at the National Fusion Laboratory of CIEMAT (Madrid) and took place on 6 October 2023 at the University of Tallinn (Estonia). \nBelow is the title and summary of her talk. \nTitle: Fusion Energy and its challenges \nAbstract: It is widely recognized that achieving sustainable clean energy supplies is one of the largest challenges that mankind will face during this century\, and that the creation of new energy sources that can overcome the problems associated with fossil fuel-based sources is of the great interest. In this regard\, nuclear fusion promises to be a source of limitless clean energy. In this presentation\, after explaining the basics of nuclear fusion\, some of the current efforts to make this dream a reality will be presented. The talk will consider current most-advanced approaches to nuclear fusion as an energy source\, such as inertial confinement and magnetic confinement\, and will provide examples of the most advanced experiments. The talk will focus also on current technological and physics challenges as well as on progress\, and on current developments\, at the Spanish National Fusion Laboratory where the experimental fusion device\, the stellarator TJ-II\, is the central focus of current Spanish research efforts. \nDr. Anna Tudela-Isanta (Open University and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) gave the second of the talks in this series on October 11\, 2023\, at the University of Tartu (Estonia). \nDr. Tudela-Isanta\, a sociolinguistic specialist\, explained to us how Catalan\, as a minority language\, is represented in the vast world of social media. \n//// Español //// \nCiclo de charlas de divulgación a cargo de prestigiosos investigadores españoles o trabajando en España. Estos eventos están patrocinadas por la Fundación Areces y la Embajada de España en Estonia. \nLa primera de las charlas estuvo a cargo de la investigadora del Laboratorio Nacional de Fusión del CIEMAT (Madrid) Dr. Isabel García Cortés y tuvo lugar el 6 de Octubre de 2023 en la Universidad de Tallinn (Estonia). \nA continuación el título y resumen de su charla. \nTítulo: La energía de fusión y sus retos \nResumen: Se reconoce ampliamente que lograr un suministro sostenible de energía limpia es uno de los mayores retos a los que se enfrenta la humanidad durante este siglo\, y que la creación de nuevas fuentes de energía que puedan superar los problemas asociados a las fuentes basadas en combustibles fósiles es de gran interés. En este sentido\, la fusión nuclear promete ser una fuente de energía limpia ilimitada. En esta ponencia\, tras explicar los fundamentos de la fusión nuclear\, se presentarán algunos de los esfuerzos actuales para hacer realidad este sueño. En la charla se estudiarán los enfoques más avanzados de la fusión nuclear como fuente de energía\, como el confinamiento inercial y el confinamiento magnético\, y se ofrecerán ejemplos de los experimentos más avanzados. La charla se centrará también en los retos tecnológicos y físicos actuales\, así como en los avances\, y en los desarrollos actuales\, en el Laboratorio Nacional de Fusión español\, donde el dispositivo experimental de fusión\, el stellarator TJ-II\, es el foco central de los esfuerzos actuales de la investigación española. \nDr. Anna Tudela-Isanta (Open University y Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) dio la segunda de las charlas de este ciclo el 11 de Octubre de 2023 en la Universidad de Tartu (Estonia). \nDr. Tudela-Isanta\, especialista sociolingüística\, nos explicó cómo el Catalán\, como lengua minoritaria\, es representada en el vasto mundo de las redes sociales.
