SUMMARY:Presentation event of ACEBaltic
DESCRIPTION:On December 14\, the Estonian Academy of Sciences will host the inaugural event of the Association of Spanish Researchers in the Baltic Countries (ACEBaltic). Jointly organized by ACEBaltic and the Embassy of Spain in Estonia\, with funding from the Fundación Ramón Areces\, the event will bring together a vibrant community of researchers\, policymakers\, and science enthusiasts. \nThe program (see full program at the end) will run from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The morning will start with some welcoming words by the Ambassadors of Spain in Estonia and in Lithuania and will follow with an outline of the past activities of the association of Spanish Researchers in Estonia (ACEE) and the journey towards the creation of the Baltic association. Then\, we will present the activities planned for 2025. \nWe are very honored to have the presence and participation of high representatives of the Spanish and Baltic Science systems. With them\, we will discuss after lunch the problem of incorporating young researchers to more established positions and how the different countries are tackling this issue. \nA key feature of the day will be the AstrónomAs exhibition\, a project from Spain that celebrates the contributions of women in astronomy. We are proud to announce that Estonian astronomers have now been added to this initiative\, and\, to close the event\, we will present the exhibition with the new names. SUMMARY:Building European bridges in research\, development and innovation
DESCRIPTION:Cycle of talks by prestigious researchers from Spain or working in Spain. These events are sponsored by the Areces Foundation and the Spanish Embassy in Estonia. \nThe first of the talks was given by Dr. Isabel García Cortés\, researcher at the National Fusion Laboratory of CIEMAT (Madrid) and took place on 6 October 2023 at the University of Tallinn (Estonia). \nBelow is the title and summary of her talk. \nTitle: Fusion Energy and its challenges \nAbstract: It is widely recognized that achieving sustainable clean energy supplies is one of the largest challenges that mankind will face during this century\, and that the creation of new energy sources that can overcome the problems associated with fossil fuel-based sources is of the great interest. In this regard\, nuclear fusion promises to be a source of limitless clean energy. In this presentation\, after explaining the basics of nuclear fusion\, some of the current efforts to make this dream a reality will be presented. The talk will consider current most-advanced approaches to nuclear fusion as an energy source\, such as inertial confinement and magnetic confinement\, and will provide examples of the most advanced experiments. The talk will focus also on current technological and physics challenges as well as on progress\, and on current developments\, at the Spanish National Fusion Laboratory where the experimental fusion device\, the stellarator TJ-II\, is the central focus of current Spanish research efforts. \nDr. Anna Tudela-Isanta (Open University and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) gave the second of the talks in this series on October 11\, 2023\, at the University of Tartu (Estonia). \nDr. Tudela-Isanta\, a sociolinguistic specialist\, explained to us how Catalan\, as a minority language\, is represented in the vast world of social media. \n//// Español //// \nCiclo de charlas de divulgación a cargo de prestigiosos investigadores españoles o trabajando en España. Estos eventos están patrocinadas por la Fundación Areces y la Embajada de España en Estonia. \nLa primera de las charlas estuvo a cargo de la investigadora del Laboratorio Nacional de Fusión del CIEMAT (Madrid) Dr. Isabel García Cortés y tuvo lugar el 6 de Octubre de 2023 en la Universidad de Tallinn (Estonia). \nA continuación el título y resumen de su charla. \nTítulo: La energía de fusión y sus retos \nResumen: Se reconoce ampliamente que lograr un suministro sostenible de energía limpia es uno de los mayores retos a los que se enfrenta la humanidad durante este siglo\, y que la creación de nuevas fuentes de energía que puedan superar los problemas asociados a las fuentes basadas en combustibles fósiles es de gran interés. En este sentido\, la fusión nuclear promete ser una fuente de energía limpia ilimitada. En esta ponencia\, tras explicar los fundamentos de la fusión nuclear\, se presentarán algunos de los esfuerzos actuales para hacer realidad este sueño. En la charla se estudiarán los enfoques más avanzados de la fusión nuclear como fuente de energía\, como el confinamiento inercial y el confinamiento magnético\, y se ofrecerán ejemplos de los experimentos más avanzados. SUMMARY:Performance\, for the first time in Spanish\, of the play “Werewolf”
DESCRIPTION:Performance\, for the first time in Spanish\, of the play “Werewolf” by the Estonian writer August Kitzberg by the theatre group SAPERE AUDE on 22 May 2023 at the Karlova Theatre in Tartu (Estonia). \nSAPERE AUDE is a heterogeneous group in age and nationality that includes Spanish speakers who love theatre and culture and students of Spanish\, offering a space in which to learn the Spanish language in a more creative way\, away from the restrictions of the classroom. The group premiered its first play in May 2022. In 2023 the adventure continued and the group set a more challenging goal: to translate and perform an Estonian play in Spanish. The Estonian girls in the group chose and translated Libahunt by August Kitzberg\, a play that\, despite having been written more than a century ago\, deals with themes that are still very much alive today: distrust of what is foreign\, contempt for what is different and attachment to customs and superstitions\, however irrational they may be. \n//// Español //// \nInterpretación\, por primera vez en Español\, de la obra “Mujer Lobo” del escritor estonio August Kitzberg por parte del grupo de teatro SAPERE AUDE el 22 de mayo de 2023 en el teatro Karlova de Tartu (Estonia). \nSAPERE AUDE es un grupo heterogéneo en edades y nacionalidades que incluye a hispanohablantes que aman el teatro y la cultura y estudiantes de español\, ofreciendo un espacio en el que aprender la lengua española de forma más creativa\, lejos de las restricciones del aula. El grupo estrenó su primera obra en mayo de 2022. En el año 2023 la aventura continuó y el grupo estableció un objetivo más retador: traducir e interpretar en español una obra estonia. Las chicas estonias del grupo eligieron y tradujeron Libahunt de August Kitzberg\, una obra que\, a pesar de haber sido escrita hace más de un siglo\, trata temas que todavía siguen muy vigentes: la desconfianza a lo ajeno\, el desprecio a lo diferente y el apego a las costumbres y supersticiones por irracionales que estas sean.

SUMMARY:Science communication: Humour\, Scandal and Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Popular talk\, targeted to the general public\, by the ACEE member Dr. Guillem Castañar Rubio that took place on June 9\, 2022 in the Delta building of the University of Tartu. \nThe title and abstract of the talk read as follows: \nTitle: Humour\, scandal and conflict in Europe’s public sphere: an interdisciplinary analysis. \nAbstract: In contemporary\, information-saturated European societies\, humour often takes the central stage in societal conflicts. While humour and satire are recognised as indispensable elements of freedom of speech\, humorous manifestations are increasingly debated\, condemned and even censored. This project\, funded by the Celsa Alliance\, aims to study the relationship between humour and conflict in the public sphere. It brings together a multidisciplinary and international team from universities in Poland\, Belgium and Estonia to investigate\, firstly\, the modes of expression of humorous communication and\, secondly\, the reactions to such communication in the public sphere. For this purpose\, an analysis of the role of humour in all kinds of public controversies in these four countries will be carried out. Our long-term goal is to create an extensive research network to study the role of humour across Europe. \n//// Español //// \nCharla popular\, dirigida al público en general\, a cargo del miembro de la ACEE Dr. Guillem Castañar Rubio. La charla tuvo lugar el 9 de junio de 2022 en el edificio Delta de la Universidad de Tartu. \nEl título y resumen de esta charla rezan: \nTítulo: Humor\, escándalo y conflicto en la esfera pública europea: un análisis interdisciplinar. \nResumen: En las sociedades europeas contemporáneas\, saturadas de información\, el humor ocupa a menudo un lugar central en los conflictos sociales. Aunque el humor y la sátira se reconocen como elementos indispensables de la libertad de expresión\, las manifestaciones humorísticas son cada vez más debatidas\, condenadas e incluso censuradas. Este proyecto\, financiado por Alianza Celsa\, pretende estudiar la relación entre humor y conflicto en la esfera pública. Reúne a un equipo multidisciplinar e internacional de universidades de Polonia\, Bélgica y Estonia para investigar\, en primer lugar\, los modos de expresión de la comunicación humorística y\, en segundo lugar\, las reacciones a dicha comunicación en la esfera pública. Para ello\, se analizará el papel del humor en todo tipo de controversias públicas en estos cuatro países. Nuestro objetivo a largo plazo es crear una amplia red de investigación para estudiar el papel del humor en toda Europa.
